Web Page Structure

Top  Previous  Next

Before you start to add content to a web page it is always sensible to plan the page's structure. Most web pages have some sort of structure which locates images next to content, on top of, below, includes tables, spacing and more.

Tables are the most common way of creating web page structure and the HTML Editor features an excellent table creation, editing and management utility which is worth getting to grips with.

HTML Editor already features some basic Structure Style Templates which allow you to build content onto a created structure style.

When creating your web pages and tables it is important to know the area in which you can work in order to avoid spilling over the Design Template boundaries and ruining the symmetry of your website. Take care to know the restrictions on page / table width that Adverts restrict you to as again if you ignore boundaries the result will be aesthetically poor. If you are not sure, check with your web manager or web design partner to be sure of page / table width restrictions for your various Design Templates.

To give you an example, on a new web page click on the Insert Table icon in HTML Editor:

A Table Properties pop up box will appear inviting you to define a number of parameters for your table:

Table Properties FCK Editor

Rows                : Number of rows you want in your table

Columns        : Number of columns you want in your table

Border size        : Thickness (if any) of Table border ( NB 0 is invisible border )

Alignment        : Left, Centre or Right

Caption        : If you choose to add one

Summary        : If you choose to add one

Width                : Table width is crucial in terms of knowing what width is available to you in your page's Template Design

Height                : If necessary

Cell Spacing        : Distance between adjoining cells

Cell Padding        : Distance between cell border and cell content

Once you have created a basic Table Structure and defined your various parameters, you can start adding content. Note, Images can be placed in individual cells and a Table can be nested inside another Table for a different design effect if appropriate.

Once you have created your web page and made 'Live' (or not as the case may be) you can always return to the page and edit the Tables you have created. Simply roll your cursor over the Table border until the Table is highlighted. Then right click on the Table and a menu will pop up  Click on Table Properties and you will once again be presented with the Table Properties pop up box.

If you right click within a Table you will be presented with another menu which will allow you to make further modifications to the table including adding and deleting cells, rows, columns as well as editing Table Properties.

NB: It is not absolutely necessary to create a Table / Tables in order to add content. You may simply wish to add content freeform.
